They did it again!
On June 22, 2024, the time had come again: over 90 teams from numerous German universities competed against each other in the nationwide student programming competition German Collegiate Programming Contest (GCPC). At the GCPC, the regional preliminary round of the International College Programming Contest (ICPC), the teams have five hours to solve as many programming tasks as possible. Each team consists of up to three students, who only had one computer at their disposal. Solving the tasks requires not only excellent programming skills, but also teamwork and organizational talent.
Computer science and mathematics students Jonathan Dransfeld, Lucas Schwebler and Yidi Zang from the Kindergarten Timelimit team overcame these challenges the best and secured first place with 10 out of 13 tasks solved, just like in 2023. The KIT team Infinite Loopers followed in second place, also with 10 tasks. A total of ten teams successfully took part for the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
The outstanding results achieved by KIT give cause for optimism for the future. The next round of the ICPC at European level, the Northwestern European Regional Contest (NWERC), will take place again in November in Delft (NL).
The ICPC is considered one of the most important student programming competitions and is organized every year by the world's largest computer science association, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). After the various regional competitions, there is also a global final. The tasks at the ICPC range from tricky implementation tasks to tasks on the design and implementation of algorithms and data structures to algorithmic geometry and mathematics.
For Bachelor students, the ITI-Bläsius offers an internship every summer semester that prepares them for the competition and from which the future participants are selected. More information at https://icpc.iti.kit.edu
