Computer scientist receives award for her research on robot learning

Making robots usable by humans outside the laboratory: This is the goal of Dr. Noémie Jaquier from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The computer scientist is one of ten newcomers who have now been honored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (German Informatics Society) for their research work and extraordinary commitment in the field of artificial intelligence. The honors took place at the International AI Camp 2023 (April 26, 2023).

"I consider robotics to be one of the most challenging areas of artificial intelligence and at the same time one of the areas from which humans and society can benefit the most in the long run," says AI newcomer Dr. Noémie Jaquier from KIT's Institute of Anthropomatics and Robotics (IAR) about her work. She received the award as one of the talents in the technology and engineering category.

Jaquier is a postdoctoral researcher in the High-Performance Humanoid Technologies group with Professor Tamim Asfour at the IAR. In particular, she focuses on learning robotic capabilities through human demonstrations and on adaptation techniques using Riemannian geometry, which underlies Einstein's theory of relativity, as a cornerstone. "With my research, I aim to equip robots with human-like learning and adaptation capabilities. To achieve this, I am drawing on geometric information that appears in robotics anyway and using it to develop data-efficient and theoretically sound learning algorithms," Jaquier said. "In this way, I hope to make robots useful to humans outside the laboratory."

Noémie Jaquier receives the award in particular because of the uniqueness of her research area and interdisciplinary methodology. In addition to appreciation for her personal research, the researcher also associates the award with a social message: "I hope to encourage other scientists to explore the topics which - although highly relevant - do not follow the biggest trends."

About the AI Camp

The AI Camp, organized by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI), brings together AI talents and renowned AI experts from around the world. In interactive discussion rounds, lecture sessions and hands-on formats, the free research convention will address transdisciplinary future issues from the thematic fields of society, sustainability, health, art and niche phenomena in AI research. The AI newcomers were chosen partly by public online voting and partly by a panel of experts.
